“The Eddie Aikau of kids contest” once again didn’t disappoint those who showed up and came to compete. Shane Dorian roughly 40 something years ago first ventured out into the lineup at Banyans. At the time he had no idea that he would ever grow up to be one of the most influential big wave surfers of our era and arguably the best big wave surfer of all time.
Despite all of his success, his humble beginning and deep Big Island roots keep him grounded. His Banyans Keiki Classic celebrated its 20th year anniversary this year. As usual all the kids received backpacks full of swag. The kids continued to push the limits of what can be done at Banyans and the “uncles” definitely took notice.
A few lucky kids walked away with some custom surfboards, FUGOO Bluetooth speakers, and some flight vouchers to help them further their surfing careers. The contest itself is amazing. All raffle proceeds went to a charity fund that helps kids go compete in NSSA contests every year, as well as help kids afford to go to the mainland to look at colleges to further their academic careers. In the end the contest is a win for everyone involved. Pro surfers, Ezekiel Lau, Sunny Garcia, CJ Kanuha and Keala Kaihe were all on hand to sign autographs for all the groms and take some time to surf with them as well.
The event was once again a huge success and left every kid with a huge smile and some with bragging rights until next year.
